American Cancer Society Selects Frostburg State University Student Stephanie Claar as National Relayer of the Month

2017 Oct 25

The American Cancer Society has selected Frostburg State University student Stephanie Claar as its national Relayer of the Month for October.

The Severna Park resident is a senior early childhood/elementary education major, a member of the Colleges Against Cancer chapter at FSU and a regular participant in Relay For Life at FSU. The selection is made by a team of 11 student Relayers who are part of a national campus leadership team for the American Cancer Society, according to the American Cancer Society. More than 300,000 college students participate across 465 campus Relay For Life events.

Claar shared with the national Relay For Life Campus Blog that she Relays for her mother Melisa, whom she lost in April following a seven-year battle with breast cancer. Claar was selected because of her resiliency, creativity and dedication to the mission of the American Cancer Society.

"I Relay so that holidays don't begin to signify another year past, one fewer with your loved one. I Relay so no one has to graduate college without their biggest cheerleader being in the audience," Claar told the blog. "I Relay so that one day no one has to lose their best friend, daily phone call, role model and hero."

Claar chose the American Cancer Society as her charity for FSU Homecoming, raising $1,475, which was the top fundraiser. She also shared with the blog the impact Relay For Life at FSU has on her.

"Relay For Life is magic on Frostburg's campus, which is what made me fall in love with it. Relay is where every single student on our campus can come together for one cause and be one university," Carr told the blog. "No matter who we are or what organizations we are in, we all put aside our differences and come together as a university to make our mark in eliminating cancer from our world. Relay is hope."

Relay For Life at FSU is set for Friday, April, 27, 2018, in Bobcat Arena and has a $32,000 goal. Individuals and teams can join FSU's Relay For Life at www.relayforlife.org/fsumd.
