FSU Student Billy Wrights Participates in Student Veterans of America's Leadership Institute

2017 Nov 9

FSU doctoral student Billy J. Wrights recently participated in the Student Veterans of America's 2017 Leadership Institute held at the George Bush Presidential Center in Dallas. This highly selective program brought student veterans together for intensive on-site leadership training. Wrights was identified as one of the top 100 student veterans from across the country to attend this all-expense-paid leadership training experience. Highlights of the training included a meeting with former president George W. Bush, a visit to the George W. Bush Presidential Museum, mentoring opportunities with various government and top business leaders and an intensive leadership program focusing on personal values, leadership ethos and creation of an ongoing support and follow-up framework with attendees and mentors.

Wrights spent several days under the mentorship of Bob McDonald, former CEO of Proctor & Gamble and the eighth U.S. Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Another mentor was Jared Lyon, president of Student Veterans of America.

Wrights served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves from 1995 to 2001. He received his bachelor's degree from FSU in 1999 while in the Marine Corps Reserves. He later returned to his alma mater to earn his master's in education in 2015, and is currently working toward a doctorate in education at FSU. An avid supporter of student veterans in higher education, Wrights said, "I am proud to be part of a University that supports student veterans and am sincerely thankful for the newly dedicated Veterans Service Center which supports student veterans and students receiving military educational benefits."

The Veterans Service Office provides student veterans and military dependents with an abundance of resources and the support they need for academic and personal success.
