FSU Student Greg Hays to Present Junior Guitar Recital

2017 Mar 20

Frostburg State University student Greg Hays will present his junior guitar recital on Thursday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU's Performing Arts Center. He will be accompanied by Patrick Sise and Paul Zimmerman on guitars. The recital is free and open to the public.

Hays will first perform the two movements, "Andantino" and "Scherzo," of "Les Soirees D' Auteuil, Op. 23," a piece for solo guitar by Napoleon Coste.

Next on the program is "Suite Castellana" by Federico Moreno-Torroba. This relatively short suite is in three movements, the first of which is "Fandanguillo." After a very brief introduction, the haunting opening theme begins. In the second movement, "Arada," the composer exhibits his deft skills at shaping beautiful, song-like melodies. The short third movement, "Danza," closes the piece in a rapid and lively expression of cheer.

After that, Hays will play "Theme and Variations From Mozart's 'Die Zauberflote,' Op.9" by Fernando Sor, which is based on a melody from Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute." It is one of Sor's most famous works for guitar and embodies his best characteristics as a composer.

Hays will also present "Sonata in D Major, K.491" by Domenico Scarlatti, arranged by Sise; "Cafe Para Dos" by Maximo Diego Pujol; and "California Breeze" by Andrew York.

Hays, who studies under Sise, plans to graduate in spring 2018 with a bachelor's degree in music performance. His career goal is to attend graduate school to pursue performance or the recording arts. A graduate of Patterson Mill High School in Bel Air, he is the son of Bob and Susan Hays of Abingdon.
