FSU Students Present Research at Maryland Native Plant Society's Fall Conference

2016 Oct 11

Karen Johnson, a graduate student in the Applied Ecology and Conservation Biology program at Frostburg State University, along with undergraduate ethnobotany major Laura Price, presented their research at the Maryland Native Plant Society's Annual Fall Conference at College Park on Sept. 17.

Johnson and Price worked on an externally funded project with Dr. Sunshine Brosi, an associate professor in the Department of Biology, on the research project. The poster was titled "Conservation Concerns of Identification Among the genus 'Actaea' in Western Maryland." The research project focuses on increasing the sustainability of nontimber forest products by differentiating black cohosh, an understory medicinal herb, from other similar and related species that are of conservation concern due to unintentional over-harvesting.
