Laura Smith Recognized With Frostburg State University Honors

Laura Smith, of Frostburg, Md., was among the graduate and undergraduate students recognized at Frostburg State University's Honors Convocation in May.

Smith, who received graduate program honors in applied ecology and conservation biology, received a Nature Genetics Travel Fellowship to present her undergraduate research in South Africa in addition to presentations in California, North Carolina, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. She received the Johnson Scholarship, the Frank D. Santamour Scholarship and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture Scholarship. Smith has received more than $50,000 in external grants from the U.S. Forest Service, the Chesapeake Bay Trust and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Her applied project has a direct ecological and environmental justice benefit to the urban tree canopy in Washington, D.C.
