2014 Jun 9

Two local students were among the graduate and undergraduate students recognized at Frostburg State University's Honors Convocation in May.

Jasmine Chung of Fort Washington, who received departmental honors in music, is a clarinetist who earned a General Music Studies degree. In addition to her fine musicianship, she distinguished herself within the department and University community for her outstanding service and leadership. She served as a band assistant and instrumental music librarian and held a number of leadership positions with the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, including president and treasurer. Chung was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the freshman honor society, in 2010, and was a charter member of the FSU chapter of the National Council of Negro Women. Her career goals are to teach clarinet privately and do music therapy. A graduate of Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, she is the daughter of Doret Sinclair of Fort Washington.

Ruth LaCourse of Laurel, who received departmental honors in English, graduated with a double major in English and ethnobotany. She is interrogative, creative, perceptive and original. She was a pillar of the creative-writing club (3 A.M. Society), active in everything from poetry slams to state-forest cleanups, worked as a writing mentor to freshmen English 101 students, was the announcer of "Ethnobotany Minute" on WFWM Public Radio at FSU and excelled as an ambassador for FSU when she studied abroad in Ireland in fall 2013. A graduate of Chapelgate Christian Academy in Marriottsville, she is the daughter of Richard and Susan LaCourse of Laurel.
