Frostburg State University will celebrate student achievements in two ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 18. Fall 2021 graduates will be honored at the 159th Commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. At 2 p.m. there will be a ceremony for graduates from the Spring 2020, Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 commencement ceremonies that were postponed due to the pandemic.

Frostburg State University values and celebrates academic excellence. Every spring, the University recognizes the academic achievements of a graduating student from each undergraduate and graduate program. These honorees are nominated by the program faculty. Typically, these honorees are recognized at a special convocation ceremony, the evening before commencement. Regrettably, this ceremony could not take place this year due to the continuing pandemic, but this does not diminish the remarkable accomplishments of these students.

Frostburg State University senior art student Will Baxter has wanted to be a professional artist since visiting Disney World when he was five years old. He was named special "artist of the day" by a street illustrator and had the chance to sketch with an official Disney artist.

As a young girl, Frostburg State University student Kaoutar Sahmoudi always had engineering on her "radar." But it was a career path that was uncommon for women and, particularly, women of color. Now, Sahmoudi's commitment to pursue her dream is receiving international recognition.

For Frostburg State University engineering student Bria' Johnson, getting to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy's prestigious Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) program this past summer was a tremendous honor. She was even more honored when her research project was highlighted on the DOE's official website. Johnson spent the 10-week program working on "Materials Modeling and Simulation or Supply Chain Assessments" determining "the long-term creep strength and life" of a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel-base alloy. Her research assignment was monitored by top scientists at the DOE's Office of Fossil Energy.

Frostburg State University student Jessica Thayer of Oakland, Md., has been named a Newman Civic Fellow, which recognizes and supports community-committed students. Thayer is a senior double majoring in law and society and political science and minoring in philosophy and is the Student Government Association (SGA) vice president.

Frostburg State University's Department of Music will present a livestreamed alto saxophone recital, titled "Eating Elephants," by junior Caitlyn Rund on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. She will be accompanied by pianist Dr. Joseph Yungen. At the end of each spring semester, Frostburg State University recognizes the academic achievements of a graduating student from each undergraduate and graduate program. While the annual convocation ceremony was unable to be held due to the continuing pandemic, the following honorees have nonetheless been recognized for their remarkable accomplishments and academic excellence.
